Microsoft have extended support for Windows XP anti-malware software to July 14th 2015.

This does not effect the end of life date for Windows XP of April 8th 2014 and business and users should not see this as a stay of execution for Windows XP. Microsoft say themselves that:

“Our research shows that the effectiveness of antimalware solutions on out-of-support operating systems is limited”

On this Microsoft site where you can download Security Essentials (Microsoft’s anti malware  software), it specifically states:

“Antimalware products have limited effectiveness on PCs that do not have the latest security updates. Therefore, after April 8, 2014, PCs running Windows XP should not be considered to be truly protected. “
